Who knows when the next big storm will knock out your power?

Over time, whole home generators begin to deteriorate. There are many elements that go into making a generator work – belts, hoses, fluids, oils. The only way to be sure that your generator will be ready when the power goes out is to perform regular generator maintenance.

Luckily Yes! is here to save the day. Our technicians are trained to ensure that all whole home generators in Utah and Nevada are ready to go when the lights go out.

What’s all included in annual generator maintenance?

In short terms, a lot. There are many things that have to be inspected, cleaned, added, and possibly replaced. Below are a few lists that will give you a little insight on what your generator electrician will do during maintenance.

  • Engine and electrical safety shutdown devices
  • Pre-cleaner

  • Breathers
  • Fuel regulation
  • Engine belts, hoses, and clamps
  • Engine and battery heaters
  • Fan guard
  • Any excessive noises or vibrations
  • Engine, alternator, control wiring

  • Power terminals and lugs
  • Control board wiring and connections

Replace:

Just like a car, there are also recommended services. Every three to four years the engine battery, as well as the ATS battery (if applicable), should be replaced. If you own a liquid-cooled generator, the cooling system should be serviced every four to five years. The internal fuel hose should be replaced every six to seven years. Finally, if you are actively running your generator, the exhaust and intake valves should be adjusted every 300 to 400 hours of run time.

This can be a lot to take in for first-time whole-home generators owners. The team at Yes! will help ease your mind. Give us a call at 844-216-9300 with any questions you may have. Home generator will not start?

If your home generator will not start, it’s time for some basic generator troubleshooting. Here are some causes to the problem and some tips to get your generator up and running:

Problem: Generator Spark Plugs
Damaged spark plugs can cause a lot of problems. They make crack, burn out, or develop build up. If this is the case, you must replace the spark plug.

  • How to Fix: Inspect the spark plug. If you see signs of damage, replace it. If there are no signs of damage, use a spark plug tester. There should be a clear, strong spark between the tester and the spark plug. If there is no spark, it needs replaced.

Problem: Generator Carburetor
When left alone, ingredients in the fuel evaporate and leave the fuel thicker and stickier. Fuel left in whole home generators for long periods of time will cause the carburetor to become clogged and prevent the engine from starting.

  • How to Fix: Clean out the carburetor with specialized cleaner. If cleaning does not help you may need to replace the carburetor.

Problem: Generator Ignition Coil
The generator ignition coil is an integral part of the generator. When the engine is running the coil sends voltage to the spark plug. If this is not working, the engine may not start.

  • How to Fix: Before replacing or testing the ignition coil be sure to check that the spark plug is work. After you ensure the spark plug is working, test the ignition coil with a tester. If it is a bad coil, you must replace it.

There are various other reason why a generator won’t start. If your troubleshooting efforts have gone awry, you can give the team at Yes! a call. We will be happy to help out!
